Richard Murphy Hospice House
Mission:
The mission of the Richard Murphy Hospice House is to provide a safe and comfortable home to hospice patients without a primary caregiver, with a primary caregiver who temporarily is unable to care for the resident, or is at risk in their current home environment.
Services:
The house is supported by the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation, a non-profit organization and offers the following services:
• 24-hour visitation
• 3 private suites with bathroom
• Kitchen
• Dining room
• Family room
• Meditation garden
• Patio
• Pet visitation
• Management by Registered Nurse
• Volunteers
Admission Criteria:

Prior to application for residency at the Richard Murphy Hospice House an individual must be admitted to a Medicare/Medicaid certified agency. This agency will subsequently be referred to as the Primary Hospice Agency (PHA).

The Interdisciplinary Team of the PHA should meet to discuss the needs of patients and explore all possible support systems before applying for residency at the Richard Murphy Hospice House. After all resources have been exhausted a member of the Interdisciplinary Team will consult with the patient to determine his/her wishes regarding residency at the Richard Murphy Hospice House. If the patient is in agreement the PHA should apply for residency to the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation on behalf of the patient.

The application for residency must be submitted to the Executive Director of the Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation.

Admission for residency will be made based on room availability. If a room is unavailable the application will be kept on file. Admission is prioritized to support individuals who are most “at risk” in their current environment, reside in Tangipahoa Parish, and. have met criteria for admission to a PHA. Admission for residency is made without regard to age, gender, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or ability to pay for services. The Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation is a private foundation that has the right to make all final decisions regarding acceptance for residency.

The PHA is responsible for providing all aspects of hospice care. The Richard Hospice Foundation’s sole responsibility is to provide residence for the Hospice patient. Hospice volunteers and or certified nursing assistance will be available 24 hours a day to serve as primary caregivers under the direction of the PHA.
6. Before residency is granted the PHA patient or representative must sign a written residency agreement statement, which outlines the Richard Murphy House rules.
7. The PHA must provide documentation that the hospice patient is free of any infectious airborne disease.
8. If the resident is discharged from the PHA another residence must be located within 48 hours and the bed made available for a hospice patient in need.
House Rules:
The house rules of the Richard Murphy Hospice House are design to ensure the comfort and safety of all residents. It is importance that each resident and significant other be sensitive to the needs of the other residents residing in the home at all times. The Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation reserves the right to ask any resident or significant other to leave the home if the house rules are broken or the resident and or significant other exhibits any behavior that threatens the well being of other residents in the home.

Visitors are welcome at any time however out of respect for the other residence preferred visitation hours are between 8am and 9pm. If a friend or relative plans to visit before or after preferred visitation hours please notify the office so that the caregiver on duty can greet them at the door so as not to disturb the residents who may be sleeping.

Families are welcome to gather for meals in the dining room. Please reserve the room for special occasions, birthdays, anniversaries etc to ensure that the room is available.

Residents are encouraged to bring items from home to personalize their room. Large heavy furniture is not allowed due to limited space. Please label all items with the residence name in the event the item becomes misplaced. The Richard Murphy Hospice House is not responsible for any money or valuables left in the home. Valuables should be left in a secure place other than the Hospice House.

No weapons or illicit drugs are allowed on the premises.

No one is allowed to visit if drunk or high.

No violence is tolerated.

Washing machines and dryers are available for use by residents. Residents and the significant other staying with the resident may use the laundry facilities as needed. It may be beneficial to label all clothing and linens in the event that they become misplaced.

The house kitchen is available to all residents. Families and significant others are encouraged to bring in food preferences for the resident. If you do not want items to be community property please label with residents name. The resident and or significant other are responsible for cleaning the kitchen after use.

One pet per resident is allowed in the residence room only. Pets are not allowed in general living areas. Pets must be up to date on shots, without infestations, no history of aggression and house trained. Residents must supply any pet supplies and food required for their pet. If another resident has a pet allergy or a respiratory condition that is aggravated by dog or cat hair the pet will have to remain outside the house. The Richard Murphy Hospice Foundation has the right to restrict any pet from the home.
10. Residents are asked to sign in and out of the daily logbook when leaving home so that in the event of an emergency they can be contacted
